Jason Pominville scored on a power play 56 seconds into overtime Wednesday night to give the host Buffalo Sabres a 3-2 victory against the Carolina Hurricanes.

Thomas Vanek and Tyler Myers also scored to help the Sabres (31-28-8) jump into a tie with Washington for ninth place in the Eastern Conference.

Ryan Miller stopped 22 shots, Pominville and Vanek also had assists, and the Sabres outshot the Hurricanes, 42-24.

Jaroslav Spacek and Chad LaRose scored for the Hurricanes, 2-1-4 in their past seven games. Coming off a 4-3 overtime win against the Capitals in Washington, Carolina dropped to 8-14-9 on the road and failed to win consecutive road games for the first time since October.

The Sabres scored the winning goal with Carolina defenseman Bryan Allen off for hooking, a penalty called with 55 seconds left in regulation. Parked atop the left circle, Pominville took a pass from defenseman Christian Ehrhoff and blasted the puck inside the far post. Goalie Cam Ward appeared to be screened by defenseman Jay Harrison.

Buffalo was 2 for 7 on the power play, the first time the Sabres have scored twice on the man-advantage in their past 31 games.

The Sabres, coming off a 3-1-1 trip, improved to 7-1-2 in their past 10 games.

Note

• Longtime NHL goalie Marty Turco officially joined the Boston Bruins Wednesday afternoon and immediately practiced with the team for the first time. Signed to one-year contract earlier this week, Turco had to clear waivers because he only had played in Europe this season. The waiver-claim period ended at noon. The Bruins signed Turco because goalie Tuukka Rask is out indefinitely with an abdominal/groin injury.
