One person was killed in a three-vehicle crash in Burgettstown yesterday morning, state police said.

The accident was reported at 6:50 a.m. in the 1000 block of Main Street.

Killed was 50-year-old Sidney Dewayne Cumpston of Burgettstown, state police said.

Troopers said Mr. Cumpston, driving north on Main Street, passed a car that had stopped in front of him near Erie Street. The driver of the second car had stopped for a third vehicle that was turning left in front of him.

Troopers said Mr. Cumpston's pickup struck the rear of the stopped car, driven by Timothy A. Moreau, 51, of Atlasburg, Washington County, then veered into oncoming traffic and slammed head-on into a car driven by Benjamin C. Woods, 25, of Chester, W.Va.

Mr. Woods suffered minor injuries and was treated at the Weirton, W.Va., Medical Center, troopers said.

Mr. Cumpston, who was not wearing a seat belt, died at the scene, state police said.
