Two state troopers helped a woman deliver a healthy baby girl along the side of Route 79 this morning.

Trooper Robin Mungo said the 25-year-old Butler woman was en route with her mother to Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC in Oakland. The pair pulled over on Interstate 79 southbound near the Interstate 279 split and called 911 when the woman was close to giving birth.

Troopers Edward Joyner and Thomas Plunkard, both fathers themselves, responded.

When they arrived, the woman was in the back seat and baby's head was visible. The baby was born within five minutes, before an ambulance arrived on scene to transport the two to Magee-Womens Hospital.

Both the woman and the child, who state police declined to identify, were in good condition, Trooper Mungo said.
