An Army veteran of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan from Tarentum who was headed back to Afghanistan later this month was killed Tuesday in a traffic crash outside his base in North Carolina.
Sgt. Edward Greiner Jr., 32, a combat engineer with the 82nd Airborne Division who worked at the Army's recruiting station in the North Hills, died when his motorcycle collided with a pickup that pulled into his path on a highway outside Ft. Bragg.
Sgt. Greiner, who was wearing a helmet, was pronounced dead at a local hospital. Police cited the driver of the pickup.
Sgt. Greiner had served in Afghanistan in 2005-2006 and in Iraq in 2007-2008. He had returned to Ft. Bragg on Friday and was scheduled to deploy to Afghanistan again at the end of March.
