The McDonald, Midway and Mount Pleasant fire departments are planning to merge into a single entity called the Fort Cherry Fire District.

The communities formed the district many years ago to help with fundraising, but now firefighters are drafting bylaws with a plan to formally merge under a single chief, McDonald councilman Mike Lauderbaugh told borough officials Monday night.

"If you have a district, you have a better opportunity for grants and funding," Mr. Lauderbaugh said.

Each fire station will remain in its current location and the public will not lose any services, he said.

Midway and Mount Pleasant are in Washington County; McDonald lies in Washington and Allegheny counties.
