At a Pittsburgh Public Schools board meeting tonight, review teams recommended that the district renew City Charter High for an additional five years but advised against renewing Career Connections Charter High School.

The school board is expected to vote on the recommendations on March 21.

If the board votes in agreement with the Career Connections review team and decides not to approve that charter school, a public hearing will be scheduled and the public will have 30 days to comment before a final vote on the charter's fate.

The review teams, which are composed of individuals within the district, visit the schools, analyze financial and student performance data, and determine compliance with code requirements for charter facilities.

The review team for Career Connections concluded that the school was not meeting conditions of its original charter agreement, citing a lack of student internships and dwindling Pennsylvania System of School Assessment scores as reasons for their recommendation, the district said.

In 2007 a team also advised the board not to renew the school's charter, but the school corrected some violations and made plans to address others in order to gain approval, according to the district.
