Pitt finalizes 2012 football schedule

Pitt completed its 2012 football schedule Wednesday but needed some help from the Big East in order to do so.
That's because the conference announced that Temple will join the league as a football member for 2012 then will become a full member in 2013.
That filled one of the two open spots that Pitt had in its 2012 schedule, the other spot was filled by the addition of Gardner-Webb, a FCS (Division I-AA) school.
It is not ideal because Pitt was already schedule to play one FCS team (Youngstown State) but the school was left to scramble to fill two holes when TCU and West Virginia left the Big East for the Big 12.
"We congratulate our in-state friends at Temple on their move to the Big East and are pleased to welcome them back to Heinz Field this fall," said Pitt athletic director Steve Pederson. "With Temple joining the league for football in 2012, our full schedule is now complete. The non-conference portion was recently finalized with an agreement to play Gardner-Webb."
That developments mean Pitt's non-conference schedule is now as follows:
Sept. 1 Youngstown State
Sept. 15 Virginia Tech
Sept. 22 Gardner-Webb
Oct. 6 at Buffalo
Nov. 3 at Notre Dame
Pitt's three home conference games (dates to be determined) will be Temple, Rutgers and Louisville and its away conference games will be at Syracuse, Connecticut, South Florida and Cincinnati.
