Direct Air will begin year-round nonstop service from Pittsburgh International Airport to Lakeland Linder Regional Airport in Florida starting in May.

"I am thrilled to make the announcement of Direct Air's new flight, because it's exciting for our region to add to the air service that is available here," Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald said in a statement today.

The nonstop flight will be offered to Lakeland three times a week, Fridays, Saturdays, and Mondays, beginning May 18.

Lakeland is in central Florida, about 35 miles east of Tampa.

Departure time from Pittsburgh will be 12:45 p.m. with an arrival in Florida at 2:45 p.m. Return flights to Pittsburgh will depart Lakeland at 7:30 a.m. with arrival in Pittsburgh scheduled for 9:30 a.m.

Mr. Fitzgerald said that both the Allegheny County Airport Authority and his administration have been working closely with Direct Air to encourage growth of its service from Pittsburgh, urging both business and leisure travelers to take advantage of the flights.

Direct Air began service to Lakeland in June as an alternative to both Tampa and Orlando airports.

Direct Air also announced the return of nonstop service between Pittsburgh and Myrtle Beach on Thursdays and Sundays, beginning March 18. Summer service, offering flights Thursdays through Mondays is scheduled to begin May 23.
