A driver and passenger died early this morning when their vehicle crashed into a wall in Wilkinsburg after Pittsburgh officers tried to stop the vehicle because it was reported stolen.

Officers from the city's Zone 5 station in Highland Park spotted the car, an Audi S6 sedan, about 12:45 a.m. near Bennett and Oakwood streets in Homewood.

They tried to stop it but the driver sped away on Oakwood toward Penn Avenue into Wilkinsburg, police spokeswoman Diane Richard wrote in a news release.

A "short pursuit ensued" before officers lost sight of the car, ending the chase, she wrote.

The driver, identified by the Allegheny County medical examiner's office as Orin Chatman, 19, of Homewood, apparently lost control of it in the 1300 block of Penn, where it struck a wall.

Mr. Chatman was pronounced dead at the scene, and his female passenger, whose name has not been released, died at 1:37 a.m. at UPMC Mercy.

Police said the car was taken at gunpoint Feb. 25 at South Syndey and 20th streets on the South Side. It was unclear whether the man driving it today was responsible for stealing it.

Ms. Richard said the crash is being investigated by Allegheny County police, who could not immediately be reached for comment.
