Who: Five ladies.

Where: Deep Creek, 2 1/4 hours away.

What to do: Relax, eat, drink wine, read, hit the spa, hike, ski.

Last Sunday, our group descended upon the Lake Pointe Inn in McHenry, Md., for a one-night girls getaway that offered just the respite from the city grind. It's less crowded on Sunday nights, and two of us took advantage of Wisp Ski Resort's $29 deal on Mondays for lift ticket, rentals and group lesson; the resort is no more than a minute across the road from the lakeside inn.

While the snow was a bit slushy for skiing, the warmish weather allowed the innkeeper to light the outdoor fire pit late Sunday afternoon for one of the high points of the stay. Imagine sitting on Adirondack chairs around the fire, roasting homemade marshmallows in the middle of winter.

Rates are $232 to $292 per night (weekday special offers all rooms for $220 Sundays through Thursdays through May 24). Breakfast is served from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. A continental breakfast also is offered for those leaving early to hit the slopes or hike.

The inn has a massage room, where trained professionals offer hot stone massage ($125 for 80 minutes), Swedish massage ($95 for an hour) and reflexology ($75 for an hour). Special spa packages are available

In warmer weather, the inn provides kayaks, canoes and bicycles, as well as an hourlong cruise on Deep Creek each night at 6 aboard its pontoon boat, Tight Squeeze. Discounted ski lift tickets are offered in the winter.

Originally a farm house, the place was purchased by Linda and George Pettie of Washington, D.C., with some investors in 1995. In a major renovation, they converted the house into the luxury bed and breakfast it is today. There are three suites, seven regular rooms, large dining area, living room with wood-burning stone fireplace, game/TV room, wrap-around porch lined with rocking chairs and lots of roaming around space. A large patio along the shore was added in 2001.
